Vanarama National League: Tranmere Rovers 2 (Norwood 4, Norburn 41) Dagenham & Redbridge 0

Dagenham & Redbridge’s away day struggles continued as they slipped to a 2-0 loss away to Tranmere Rovers in the National League.

Daggers endured a disastrous first half at Prenton Park, conceding a goal at either end of the opening period to trail by two at the break.

The Essex club could not find a route back into the match as their winless run on the road stretched to nine matches in the league.

Daggers were without Morgan Ferrier for the trip to Prenton Park, with the attacker having picked up an injury while away with the England C squad.

There was a recall to the starting XI for Ben Nunn, who had not begun a game for the Essex club since October 7.

The Essex club could not have got off to a worse start on Merseyside, falling behind in just the fourth minute.

A flick on by Andy Cook found strike partner James Norwood, who dribbled into the box, before firing past Daggers stopper Mark Cousins.

Rovers continued to control the early exchanges, with Cook nodding a free kick over the bar in the 17th minute.

There was more trouble for Daggers from a set piece two minutes later, with Tranmere captain Steve McNulty heading over from a corner.

With 23 minutes left in the half, Cook went close again, but saw his effort from the middle of the box saved by Cousins.

In the 42nd minute, Rovers doubled their lead when Ollie Norburn fired home at the far post after Liam Ridehalgh delivered a fine corner.

On the stroke of half time, Mellon’s men could have added a third, but Cousins was out fast to deny Dylan Mottley-Henry, who was through on goal.

Despite the miss, Daggers still faced a mountain climb as they went into the break trailing 2-0.

Ten minutes into the second period, Fejiri Okenabirhie crossed for Daggers forward Michael Cheek, but the striker nodded over.

However, Rovers nearly added a third in the 60th minute, but Norwood put his effort narrowly wide after bursting past the defence.

Midfielder Charlee Adams tried his luck for Still’s side from distance seven minutes later, but his effort was comfortably saved by Scott Davies.

With 19 minutes remaining, Norwood nearly scored his second of the afternoon, but instead fired his effort into the netting.

In the 75th minute, Scott Doe gifted the ball to Norwood inside the box, with the Tranmere man rounding keeper Cousins, but from a tight angle was unable to score.

Cheek nearly pulled one back for Daggers with eight minutes remaining, but saw his effort dealt with by Davies.

In stoppage time, Adams had an effort from inside the box following a free kick blocked as the Essex side still pressed for a route back into the match.

However, there was to be no consolation goal for the Essex club on Merseyside as they slipped out of the play-off places in the division.

Daggers are next in action at home to Guiseley on Saturday, when Still will hope his side can get back to winning ways.
