The signs are promising, insists Daggers midfielder Chambers

The signs bode well for the Daggers if Ashley Chambers emulates his achievements in the 4-3 defeat against Colchester last weekend, and the 
attacking midfielder insists performances are improving at just the right time.

Chambers was influential in Saturday’s game, setting up fellow new signing Ashley Hemmings and skipper Abu Ogogo, before scoring a third to put them 3-1 ahead.

And although the game ended in disappointing fashion as the Daggers shipped two goals late one to lose, Chambers saw enough to suggest they can be challenging at the right end of the League Two table once again.

“It wasn’t too bad personally in setting two up and scoring one, but we are a little disappointed with how the game finished, with two very unfortunate goals,” said Chambers.

“We were quite happy with how we performed and that’s the most important thing in pre-season. I think we are getting there and if we can take that into the first game of the season we won’t be too far from where we want to be.

“The last two games have been up against strong opposition from the league above so it shows that we are in a good place but there’s still a long way to go until the kick-off.”

The former York City and Cambridge man has experienced highs and lows during pre-season, with injury and the birth of a son keeping away from the first-team action in the early stages.

However, he has now got his eyes firmly focused on the job at hand, and believes there is more to come from himself and the team as they look to emulate, if not improve on last season’s ninth-place finish.

“It’s my second little boy, but I forgot about all them late nights with the eldest being four!” he added.

“It’s nice to get back to see them. Obviously coming to Dagenham means staying away from them for a little bit, but obviously I am coming down here to work hard to provide for them.

“Pre-season has been a little bit stop-start. I picked up an injury on the first day back, but thankfully I was only out for a week or so.

“I think I’m getting close to where I want to be, but there’s still a little bit more to come.”
