Defender Ian Gayle has signed a new one-year contract at Dagenham & Redbridge.

The 21-year-old rose to prominence at the end of last season after coming off the bench at Wycombe Wanderers following Scott Doe’s sending off in the 2-0 loss.

The Academy graduate went on to make three further appearances for the Daggers as they finished the 2013/14 campaign in ninth place after a 3-2 win at Cheltenham Town on the final day of last season.

Burnett told the Post the likelihood of a new deal for the centre half at the beginning of the month, stating at the time: “We’ve got no issue with Ian Gayle and he’s signing a new contract. He was a massive positive for us at the end of last season and hopefully he can challenge again next season.”

Gayle now faces the challenge of testing Brian Saah and Scott Doe for a regular spot in the starting line-up, and could be joined by the transfer listed Luke Wilkinson if the former Porsmouth youngster doesn’t get a move away from Victoria Road.

Burnett has built from the back this summer, with the signings of goalkeepers Liam O’Brien and Mark Cousins, in additon to defenders Nathan Green and Damian Batt.
