Pre-season friendly: Ebbsfleet United 4 Dagenham & Redbridge 0
Daggers were put to the sword by Ebbsfleet United as Charlie Sheringham’s doubled helped the Kent side brush aside Wayne Burnett’s charges.
Burnett started with trialists Jamie Cureton and George Porter, but they spent much of the half on the back foot with little for the forwards to feed off.
The warning signs were there with three minutes on the clock when Anthony Cook’s free-kick found Charlie Sheringham but he directed his header just wide.
However, another ball into the box wasn’t dealt with and this time Sheringham headed past Mark Cousins, who did get a hand to the effort.
And on 19 minutes Sheringham should have double the lead when a lovely crossfield ball from Daryl McMahon found Cook and his pinpoint centre found Sheringham, only for the former AFC Wimbledon man to head over from close range.
Home goalkeeper Preston Edwards had a very quiet opening 45 minutes and he went the whole half without having to make a save.
Ashley Chambers saw a shot blocked and Joss Labadie fluffed a shot wide from 25 yards, but that was it for the visitors.
And the former gave away a penalty in the closing stages of the opening period when he needlessly tugged back Michael Corcoran. Billy Bricknell made no mistake from the spot.
No changes were made at the break from either side, but 15 minutes into the second half and all bar Ian Gayle went off with trialists Alan Connell, David Fitzpatrick, Gozie Ugwu all coming on.
And that seemed to create was a whole lot of confusion as Ebbsfleet continued to dominate.
A ball in to the back post was then bizarrely put back into his own area by Scott Doe and with Liam O’Brien out of position, Sheringham had the simple task of tapping into an unguarded net.
Daggers looked at sixes and sevens at the back and Sheringham should have completed his hat-trick when getting on the end of Joe Howe’s centre, but he headed wide.
However it did become four 10 minutes from time as the impressive Cook delivered the ball in and former Dagger Alex Osborn was on hand at the back post to net.
Pre-season may be more about performances than results, but it is hard to think of any positives which came out of this game.
They now move on to Tuesday night, when they host League One opposition in the shape of MK Dons at Victoria Road.
