The old adage is a good goalkeeper saves you 10-15 points a season, and Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett has his eyes on recruiting two experienced custodians over the summer.

The Victoria Road side are currently without a goalkeeper having not offered youngster Jordan Seabright a new deal, while number one Chris Lewington has opted for pastures new.

That leaves the Daggers in a slight predicament and, while it is still early days, Burnett indicated a desire to have two goalkeepers fighting tooth and nail for a regular berth in his starting XI next season.

“I’m looking for two experienced first-team goalkeepers,” said Burnett. “I looked at it last season and Chris wasn’t really getting pushed in all fairness.

“Jordan came in on the odd occasion and did reasonably well but at his young age he needs to be playing games and that’s what I told him.

“I didn’t feel he was ready for the first team. He never had the opportunity to play too many games, especially over the Christmas period when there weren’t so many development team games.

“In an ideal world I would have had three goalkeepers with Jordan out on loan, but the finances made it impossible to do so.”

At the other end of the field, Burnett also hinted that striker Afolabi Obafemi would be offered a new deal with negotiations still ongoing.

But he is still waiting for news on Gavin Hoyte, Zavon Hines, Bradley Goldberg and Ian Gayle, having offered them new deals last week.

Burnett would like to go with a squad of around 24 players for the 2014/15 campaign and will not rule out loans, dependant on Hines and last season’s injured top goalscorer Rhys Murphy.

“It was a small squad last season and that was dictated by finances and we were fortunate with other clubs and their loan deals,” he added.

“But I’d like around 24 players this season, and some may be loans because we don’t know at the moment if Zavon will firstly sign a deal and whether he’d be fit in time for the start of the season.

“It’s still a waiting game as well with Rhys at the moment with his hip injury so we’ll just have to wait and see.”
