New Daggers Academy Manager Kenny Brown believes there are more youngsters that can follow in the footsteps of Jack Connors and Jon Nouble and make the grade in the first team.

Brown joined the Victoria Road club in January as under-16s manager, but has now taken up the Academy role with Warren Hackett now concentrating on his first-team duties.

The likes of Connors have made the step up to the first team with minimum fuss, while Nouble signed his first professional deal at the end of last season and Brown feels there is plenty more on the Daggers production line.

“What’s good about this club is that every one in the first-team backroom staff have worked with the Academy at some point,” said Brown.

“The club cannot afford to go out and get big names, we have to promote from withing and the ethos certainly is if you are good enough then you are old enough. With the likes of Jack and Jon in the first team it gives encouragement to the youngsters that if they work hard then they can follow in their footsteps.

“We have re-signed eight or nine in to the Academy and we’ve not just done that to make up the numbers, we believe we have a good crop coming through and hopefully they can continue to progress well.”

Brown enjoyed a good football career and was a fans’ favourite during his five-year stay at West Ham United.

He has also coached and managed at non-league level, but the Academy role is a completely different kettle of fish for Brown.

“When you are at first team level it is very much a results-driven industry,” added Brown.

“That’s not the case with the youngsters, you work with them on more of an individual level.

“You have to make them feel relaxed and comfortable in the environment if you want them to succeed.”
