Spot kick proved decisive moment as Daggers suffered fifth straight loss

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Peter Taylor says he had no qualms with the penalty award for Wrexham in a 2-1 home defeat in the Vanarama National League.

Daggers went into half-time level at Victoria Road after a Brad Walker own goal cancelled out a stunning strike from Luke Young.

The winner came in the 68th minute when Luke Summerfield scored for the Dragons from 12 yards after Lamar Reynolds tripped Kevin Roberts in the box.

And Taylor feels referee David Rock was right to award the visitors a penalty for the foul.

“Unfortunately we’ve given away another poor goal, the penalty is a poor goal because we shouldn’t give one away in that situation,” he said.

“I have no complaints with the penalty because the Wrexham player got ahead of my player and got the first touch, so we were in trouble.

In truth, Wrexham could have won by more with Jordan Maguire-Drew and Mike Fondop among those to squander good chances.

But Taylor insists there were positives to take, despite Daggers slipping to a fifth straight league loss.

“The quality of the opponent was good and we knew that Wrexham are a good team,” he added

“We knew they were high up in the table, but there were enough good things from us to try and nick a point, which would have been very nice.”

As for the Daggers goal, it came in fortuitous circumstances as Walker seemed to flick a Liam Gordon cross from the left past Rob Lainton in the Wrexham goal.

Taylor was pleased with the strike of fortune, but would rather it came in a triumph for the Essex club.

“We had an instant response to their first goal with a bit of luck, but we needed that luck because not too many things have gone our way this season.

“The performance was a bit more like it, but it was unfortunately another defeat. It’s not good enough and we’re not in a good position, but if you can take some positives out of a defeat, you get up for Monday morning to get the team ready for the next match.”
