Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Luke Howell was delighted to score the winner and help his side to a 3-2 victory against Guiseley.

Daggers got off to a slow start and found themselves 2-0 down after 23 minutes, but they battled back to level before half-time with Howell eventually scoring with ten minutes left in the match at Victoria Road.

Howell has struggled with injuries since the start of the season, but has found his name on the teamsheet more frequently in recent weeks and is more confident going forward after his first goal of the season.

“I’m really pleased, obviously personally as it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet but even more pleasing was the way we came back from 2-0 down,” he said.

The 30-year-old former Boreham Wood player believes the whole team knew they had the character to fight back and it was great to see it shine through against the National League strugglers.

“We know that we’ve got that character. I don’t believe we played that badly to be 2-0 down, it was just some poor clearances and a few individual mistakes, but it was great character to come back from 2-0 down and to go in at 2-2 at half-time set us up for the second half,” he added.

“We always felt like we’d get that winner in the second half.”

Despite only winning one of their last eight matches going into the clash, Howell admitted he was never too worried that their fortunes would change, as he feels John Still’s side has still been playing very well.

“We’ve been on not such a great run in terms of results, but some of the performances have been good, barring obviously Tranmere last week. That wasn’t good enough,” he said.

“Other than that, we’ve been playing well and it’s just not really been going for us, so it was important that we came back and worked hard to get the three points because one in eight is not the form that we expect from ourselves.

“Going forward that’s something we’re looking to change.”

Howell, a former Lincoln and Milton Keynes Dons midfielder, will now be hoping to remain in the line-up for their trip to Chester on Saturday.

The match will be shown on BT Sport as the early kick-off at 12.30pm.
