Daggers defender has three goals so far this term, placing him fourth in Essex club’s scoring charts

Dagenham & Redbridge full back Sam Ling says he is keen to keep getting on the scoresheet, having enjoyed a fruitful campaign to date.

After not netting in 12 outings for Daggers last term, the attack-minded defender has three goals in 22 appearances this season.

It is a return that sees the 20-year-old fourth in the scoring charts for the Essex club, with only Corey Whitely (8), Morgan Ferrier (7) and Michael Cheek (6) ahead of him.

All three of Ling’s goals have come away from home, scoring at Fylde, Aldershot Town and Chester.

The youngster is already closing in on his target for the campaign but he is keen to add a few more before the term is out.

“Before the season started, I set a target with (coach) Junior Lewis of five goals; I’m already on three, which has come as a bit of a surprise, but I’ll always back myself,” he said.

“Whatever position I play, I like to attack and get in and around the box. Scoring many more goals is what I want to do.”

As well as getting among the scorers, Ling has provided several assists for Daggers, including teeing up Morgan Ferrier for the winner against Dover Athletic last month.

Despite being a full back, Ling has certainly been a threat in the final third for the Essex club this term.

And the defender believes that is in part down to having a pair of former wingers in Lewis and Darren Currie on the coaching staff at Victoria Road.

“Darren and Junior tell whoever is playing full back to bomb on and join the attacks,” he added.

“The modern-day game sees full backs more as attackers than they were in the past.

“As long as the assists keep coming and I’m helping the team get three points, it’s all good.”

As well as being deployed in his favoured right back position, Ling has filled in at both left back and as a wing back this term.

Playing in a variety of positions has showcased the youngsters’ versatility, and the defender says he is happy to play anywhere for the team.

“Playing in different positions doesn’t faze me. All through my career, I’ve been a versatile player and I’ve played in many positions,” he said.

“I’m just happy to be on the pitch, getting minutes under my belt and playing well.”
