Dagenham & Redbridge: John Still says attack should have been more ‘selfish’ in defeat to Woking

Daggers boss says he would like to have seen forward players run at defenders more at Cards

Manager John Still believes Dagenham & Redbridge could have benefited from being more selfish in attack after losing at Woking in the National League on Saturday.

The Essex club started both halves of the clash at the Cards brightly, but were unable to capitalise on their dominance.

The likes of Morgan Ferrier and Fejiri Okenabirhie tested Woking stopper Nathan Baxter with plenty of efforts, but the teenager, on loan from Chelsea, was in inspired form between the sticks.

Despite the heroics of the Cards keeper, Still feels that had some of his forward players been greedier, it could have helped Daggers triumph.

“What was missing from our forward play was a little bit of selfishness, someone getting it and running at a defender, as opposed to popping it off to a team mate,” said the 67-year-old.

“When you get in those forward positions, you have to attack; if you lose it, you lose it.

“When you continually attack players, you will get some success out of it.

Both Corey Whitely, who was ill, and Michael Cheek, who is on his way back to fitness following a knee injury, were absent from the loss at Woking.

And though Still admits not to have the attacking duo was blow, he knows there was little point in crying over it.

He added: “We missed those attacking players, but we haven’t got them at the minute.”
