Dagenham & Redbridge: Craig Robson feels under no extra pressure captaining Daggers in absence of Scott Doe

Former Bognor Regis Town man has worn armband in recent weeks with regular skipper on the bench

Craig Robson believes captaining Dagenham & Redbridge does not change too much how he operates on the pitch.

The defender has been wearing the armband for the Essex club recently with regular skipper Scott Doe on the bench.

Robson has been chosen to captain the side ahead of the likes of the vastly experienced Andre Boucaud and Luke Howell.

But the 26-year-old appears fairly nonchalant about leading the team in his defensive partner’s absence, saying: “It’s just one of those things, filling in for ‘Doey’ when he’s not playing.

“It doesn’t matter who is the captain really, there should be 11 people out there speaking and talking.”

Daggers return to action on Saturday after a 10-day break when they visit Sutton United in the National League.

Having exited the FA Trophy in the first round last month, John Still’s men were left without a game last weekend.

It means their last outing was a 3-2 defeat at home to Boreham Wood on January 9, a result which left them 10 points adrift of leaders Macclesfield Town.

Robson acknowledges that the loss to Wood severely harmed Daggers’ hopes of winning the title, but knows there is still enough time left to claw back the deficit to Macclesfield.

“No one is running away with the title this season which is lucky for us because if there was someone doing what Lincoln did last year, it would be over by now,” added the former Bognor Regis Town man.

“Lucky for us, it’s still all to play for and the team that can put the most runs together will win the title.”

Daggers will hope the trip to Sutton marks the start of a good run of form, having been up-and-down in recent weeks.

The Victoria Road outfit have taken just five points from a possible 18 since December 23, having won each of their previous four league games before then.

Robson is at a loss to explain why it is that Daggers have been so inconsistent in recent weeks.

However, the centre back insists the team are determined to finally get back on a good run of form soon to boost their chances of promotion.

“I’m sure we will get it going at the end, but at the moment it’s just not there,” said Robson.

“I’m not sure what it is, but it’s just not there. We have to dig deep and go again.”
