Daggers may have lost out to Brentford in dramatic fashion last night in the Capital One Cup but manager Wayne Burnett was proud with his side’s character.

The Victoria Road hosts were never in the lead all night, until Ashley Hemmings put them 6-5 up in the second half of extra time.

But former Dagger Harlee Dean had other ideas as he headed home to force the game to the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

And it was the Bees who went through after Jack Connors and Ashley Chambers saw efforts saved by Richard Lee.

But while Burnett was concerned by the lack of defending on show from his side, he hailed the Daggers character to keep on coming back.

“After 10 minutes we were 2-0 and I thought this was going to be an onslaught but we showed really good character to get back into the game.

“We scored some decent goals and I am pleased with that and if you score six goals you expect to win the game but I am disappointed in the manner in which we conceded some of the goals.

“It was very unlike our defence but we showed real good character and work ethic I am so proud because we were playing against a very good Championship side.

“At 6-5 you hope you can see the game out but the state of this game was unbelievable. I can’t remember who scored the goals!

“We practice penalties regularly but you can’t foresee what was going to happen. With penalties it is one of those things, It wasn’t meant to be.”
