Barkingside boss ‘positive’ despite loss

Frew reflects on ‘strange’ opening-day defeat

Barkingside manager Matt Frew admitted Saturday’s opening day defeat to Thamesmead Town in the Ryman One North was “strange” but revealed he took huge positives from their display.

Side were beaten 2-1 by the relegated Ryman Premier Division outfit after performing impressively in the first period, where they took the lead on 19 minutes through Calvin Poku.

However goals from Sean Roberts, five minutes before the break, and Tyrus Gordon-Young 13 minutes from time punished Frew’s men, who host Maldon at Cricklefiead Stadium tonight.

“It was strange because first half I couldn’t have asked for much more,” he said.

“We created 11 chances and put one in and then they created one all half and scored from it.

“Second half we came out and did the complete opposite. We didn’t create anything, but again they only had one chance and scored. It was definitely a game of two halves and the goals we conceded disappointed me.”

The football produced in the opening half of the season impressed Frew immensely, though, enough so to leave him confident a positive season is in store.

Barkingside’s manager highlighted the ruthlessness of the division too, adding: “The football was a joy to watch in the first half, but football is a 90-minute game, not 45 minutes, and in the end we got punished.

“The game should have been dead and buried because we were camped in their half and they couldn’t get out.

“There wasn’t a difference between the two teams and if anything we looked like the relegated Ryman Premier team in that first half.

“I can take a lot of positive from that first half performance and I know we have players that are good enough to push us up the table.

“We will only get stronger, and on that form we could definitely look at the top half of the table. Don’t get me wrong, I know it is hard and teams are going to approach my players, but as I have said, I have never had a stronger team at Barkingside and we will only get stronger.”
