Barkingside boss Frew contemplates changes for Heybridge test

Barkingside manager keen to use Cricklefield pitch to their advantage.

Barkingside boss Matt Frew admits he may have to make changes for tonight’s Ryman North encounter against Heybridge Swifts despite victory at the weekend.

Frew’s outfit beat Soham Town Rangers 2-1 on Saturday, with Joe Bricknell and Calvin Poku netting to secure a come-from-behind win at Cricklefield.

Conditions were tough though as the heavy pitch cut up badly and made it very difficult for both sides.

Frew admits the match may have taken a lot out of his players, and with that in mind could freshen things up tonight with Tom Davie set to return to the side following injury.

“Heybridge have played at the weekend as well so both teams only get a one-day break,” said Frew. “The boys have showed a lot of guts on Saturday and you can see they are knackered.

“We have probably played on a heavier pitch as well, but Tom Davie should be fit. He’s got blisters and that’s why he couldn’t play against Soham.

“I will assess a few of the other boys as I am sure a few of them will be tight. I might change it about and freshen it up in a few areas.

“The boys are really going to be tired after the Soham game. We have to forget about that result now though and focus on Heybridge Swifts.”

The pitch at Cricklefield has been a problem for a number of years, but Frew believes they have to take full advantage of that.

“It’s very boggy and cuts up like a proper grassroots pitch, but teams don’t like it and I said to them you have to use it your advantage,” he added.

“Teams come here and hate this place, but we have got to play here and it’s our home and we have to make it hard for teams.

“It doesn’t look bad when you first walk out there and it has all been rolled, but as soon as a boot goes on it, it cuts up and it’s like a mud bath.”
