Ryman Div 1N: Heybridge 1 Barkingside 1
Barkingside brought a point back from Scraley Road after a hard-fought Bank Holiday Monday battle.
Buoyed by their come-from-behind success against Cheshunt at Cricklefield two days earlier, Matt Frew’s men had their moments against Swifts, but had to settle for a share of the spoils on a wet day.
Heybridge had the first sight of goal on six minutes when Andrew Tomlinson fired wide from 25 yards.
Steve Good headed wide from a Liam Springett free kick moments later, while Neil Richmond fired wide of the advancing Tim Pitman – deputising for the suspended Chris Clark – and the post on 16 minutes.
Swifts broke the deadlock soon after, though, as another Springett free-kick found the head of Billy Hunt, who glanced the ball home.
Danny Lopes hit a post before the half hour mark, while Lewis Francis fired into the side netting for Barkingside on 34 minutes in a rare sight of goal at the other end.
Swifts captain Andrew Joslin volleyed wide from Tomlinson’s pass before half time, while Pitman saved well from Lopes after the restart.
And Barkingside were back on terms on 55 minutes when Dan Callaway flicked on a cross from the right and substitute Jack Leachman powered the ball into the net.
Richmond fired over the Barkingside crossbar on the hour, after Joslin helped on Springett’s throw-in, but the visitors went close as Daniel Sambridge denied Jason Fontaine with a save at his near post.
Frew sent Chris Taylor on for John Bricknell and the substitute was denied by Good’s sliding challenge after Tomlinson had fired over from long range for the home side.
Danny Hayes produced a good block to thwart Lopes, after Hunt’s save from the left was saved by Pitman.
But Barkingside then went close to a second as Steve Carvell’s effort was blocked by the sliding Danny Barber.
There were only two minutes left when Fontaine’s cross found Carvell, who shot inches wide after beating his man in the box.
Another Fontaine cross found the head of the unmarked Dan Jones, whose effort was comfortably saved by a relieved Sambridge.
And Swifts needed a clearing header from Barber to deny Taylor after a great run by Dion Polious and cross from Carvell just before the final whistle.
Barkingside: Pitman, Hayes, Polious, Ellul, Callaway, Oxby, Fontaine, Bricknell, Carvell, Gulfer, Francis. Subs: Leachman, Taylor, Frew, Jones, Clark.
