Essex club drew 1-1 with Chesterfield on Saturday

Matt Robinson was pleased Dagenham & Redbridge clambered out of the bottom four in the Vanarama National League with a 1-1 draw at home to Chesterfield.

Daggers fell behind in the 13th minute at Victoria Road, with Curtis Weston netting from close range for the Spireites.

With 11 minutes remaining, though, Chike Kandi made the most of an error in the Derbyshire club’s defence to pull the Essex club level.

The win lifted Peter Taylor’s men out of the bottom four, though only goal difference is keeping them above the relegation zone.

But Robinson feels Daggers are unfortunate not to have a greater cushion over the drop zone, believing the Essex club would have been worthy victors had they triumphed over Martin Allen’s outfit.

“I feel like we were the ones trying to get the win. It was a poor start from us conceding inside the first 20 minutes, but the lads rallied on and we got a point,” he said.

“It took us out of the bottom four, which is good for us and it’s another stepping stone for us to build on.”

Between them on Saturday, Daggers and Chesterfield clocked up just shy of 30 fouls in the draw in a physical contest.

But Robinson revealed the Essex club knew they were always going to be in for a battle, having done their homework on the Spireites.

“We knew what style Chesterfield were going to play before the game even kicked off,” added the midfielder.

“That kind of game and game plan can often make the game quite scrappy.

“There were lots of second balls to challenge for, lots of challenges in the air and it’s very easy to get caught up in what seems like a battle, especially at set-pieces.

“We defended our set-pieces very well and came away with a point.”
