Wanstead skipper Arfan Akram has called on his side for an immediate response against surprise title contenders Harold Wood on Saturday after last weekend’s big loss to Shenfield.

It proved to be a bad day at the office against Shenfield as chasing down 222 for victory, Akram saw the batting line-up crumble as they were skittled out for just 65.

And while disappointed by his side’s showing with the bat, which he felts was one of their worst for some time, he knows he’ll get a response this weekend when they host a Harold Wood side just four points behind the reigning league champions, having been promoted from Division One last season.

“The lads know it was a bad performance last weekend and they are keen to put it right straight away,” said Akram.

“It was just a bad day at the office. We bowled and fielded okay, though missed a few half chances which proved to be crucial in the end. But all round the batting was poor and we lacked the concentration required and we failed to execute.

“It is probably up there in terms of disappointing batting displays from us. There was a few poor shots, while there was some unlucky dismissals as well, but you always get them anyway.

“Shenfield played well and we can’t take anything away from their performance, but the boys were upset and we will get a response from them this weekend.”

On Harold Wood, Akram added: “They have been playing some good cricket as well so they are up there for a reason. They are not playing with any fear and that’s dangerous, but we will learn from last week’s defeat and hopefully come back stronger for it.”
