Wanstead skipper Arfan Akram was walking on air after his side’s winning weekend, as they got their league challenge back on track on Saturday and followed that up by taking Twenty20 silverware after their final win over Brentwood at Hutton the following day.

After the disappointment of defeat against Shenfield the previous weekend, the Herons took a five-wicket win at Harold Wood Park to get the weekend off to a flying start.

Skipper Arfan Akram said: “It was really important for us to get the right result on Saturday, and to put on a good display. We achieved both I feel.

“Shenfield won the toss and elected to bat, but our fielding was excellent and we managed to restrict them to 244 when, quite honestly, I thought at one stage they would post more in the region of 280.

So, chasing a reachable target, the captain had great praise for one of his players in particular. “I thought Saurav Prabhakar was superb,” he said. “It was his first chance to make a real impact on the first team, and he grabbed it with both hands.”

“He’s only 17 or 18, but he showed great control and maturity for his innings today.”

“Jonathan Das also showed great maturity for his knock too,” he added. “He dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground for a wonderful 84. John Chambers and my brother Adnan helped push the score along too for our winning total of 248.

On Sunday, at Hutton, the Herons landed their first piece of silverware of the season with a close, five-run win over Brentwood in the final of the Dukes Essex Twenty20 competition.

Akram’s boys had already faced a closely-fought semi-final against Colchester & East Essex earlier in the day, winning by just seven runs after 112 runs in 18.2 overs.

“We restricted Colchester to 107 runs,” said a delighted Wanstead captain. “Our bowling was superb with three wickets apiece for Usman Sahar and Joe Ellis-Grewal, well supported by Azhar janiua, who took a brace himself.

“It set us up nicely for the final against Brentwood, which, in the event, turned out to be an even tighter affair.”

Batting first in the final, the Herons were all out for 94 runs in 19.3 overs, which left the Overton Drive side plenty to do to get their hands on the trophy.

“We bowled with great skill,” said Akram, “the heroes of the day were the spinners.” With two overs to go, Brentwood needed 11 runs for victory.

“Quite amazingly, Fayyaz Khan bowled a maiden over as his last contribution to the game. Quite remarkable in this type of competition,” enthused the captain.

“We restricted them to six runs for that final over to give us a magnificent five-run victory, and the trophy. I can’t tell you how delighted and proud I am of every one of my players.”
