Wanstead may top the Essex Premier Division table at the moment, but skipper Arfan Akram has fired a warning to their divisional rivals – we haven’t played anywhere near our best yet!

The reigning league champions beat Harold Wood by 31 runs last weekend to make it four wins on the spin after their opening match with Shenfield was abandoned, and they’ll hope to follow that up with another success on Saturday when they head to league newcomers Loughton.

Akram is naturally pleased with the start the Nutter Lane side have made results wise, but he believes there is plenty more to come from his team.

“We are still not playing our best cricket at the moment, but from last year the players have got that extra experience and discipline now,” said Akram.

“We are really pleased with the start, but there’s still a long way to go and there’s definitely room for improvement.”

Akram will be after a better batting performance from his outfit after they were bowled out for 134 last weekend against Premier Division newcomers Harold Wood.

Their strong bowling attack rescued them on that occasion, but they’ll be coming up against a Loughton side who were also promoted to the top tier of club cricket in the county.

And though their opponents at the weekend have only one league win so far, Akram is warning his side against complacency as the league now switches to timed matches.

“Loughton haven’t had the best start, but like Harold Wood they have just come up so we have got to respect them,” he added.

“But if we play to the best of our ability then we know we can pick up the win.

“The timed games are a completely different challenge to the overs matches we have had so far, but we feel confident we have what it takes to come out on top.”
