A great team bowling display and 54 not out from Sule Saleem saw Ilford Catholic pick up 26 points in their Herts & Essex Division One fixture at South Loughton on Saturday.

The seven-wicket win allowed Catholic to close the gap on leaders Stansted to 16 points.

The home side batted first and Shearer (21) and Baker (16) applied themselves well against some tight bowling from Vince Mulholland (1-19) and John Rogers (1-21).

Shearer was first to depart, bowled by Rogers, and danger man Baker was superbly caught behind by Steve Ward off the bowling of Abdul Wahab (2-25).

Catholic took wickets at regular intervals, as Abdul Wahab (2-25) once again bowled a great spell and Abbas Saleem (4-15) removed the middle order.

An excellent spell of swing bowling from Anujan Thiru (2-28) culminated in him clean bowling the last two batsmen in consecutive balls to bowl out South Loughton for 110.

Catholic lost Ward (5) and Liam Mulholland (9) early and were in trouble at 15-2 from nine overs.

Runs came slowly, but Abbas Saleem (23) and Ed Tooth (15 not out) added 27 in a dogged stand.

Kaiser Chowdhary (2-21) and Dave Smith (1-21) bowled their opening spells straight through for South Loughton, and Chowdhary bowled Saleem with an excellent yorker in his last over.

However, a brilliant unbeaten 54 from brother Sule Saleem, which included three sixes and seven fours, saw Catholic home by seven wickets.

Catholic are due to face Hockerill at Barkingside on Saturday.

■ Catholic’s 1994 cup-winning side were reunited last Sunday in a great day for the club as they took on Leyton Orient Supporters CC to mark the 20-year anniversary of winning the Morrant League Cup.

All but one of the 12 original players turned out at Barkingside Recreation Ground and the 1994 side opened with Chris Leighton (72) and Paul Alexander (30) who, with support from Dave Farenden (14), Rodney Miller (14) and Vince Mulholland (21), took the total to 176-9 from 40 overs.

John Rogers (0-30) bowled well to keep Orient Supporters openers Steve Ward (55) and Ed Tooth (68) in check.

Dave Farenden rolled back the years and was unlucky not to take a wicket, as Ryan Naylor (2-20) made a return to his previous best.

But Bob Marsh (14 not out) and Martin Riches (27 not out) batted well as the Orient fans won by eight wickets with a few overs to spare.
