A good start - could do better!

It seems like only a couple of weeks since the 2014 season began, but we are already nearly half way through the League programme.

The firsts are approaching mid-table after recording two crushing wins in the Shepherd Neame Essex League 50/50 format games - by 122 runs over Basildon & Pitsea, and by 137 runs against Epping.

Highlight of the latter match was a Club (and SNEL) record score of 429-6, featuring a club record partnership of 350 from Jibran Azam (200; following on from 169 the week before) and Shane Vamadevan (138, in his first game of 2014, post A-levels).

The 1st XI will be looking to continue their improved form into the second half of the season, but they will need more runs from the rest of the team to support Jibran. The return of players after exams and extended weddings should help.

The seconds sit third in their division, although they have played more games than the teams above them. More runs will be needed to consolidate a position in the top half of the table, and once again the end of GSCE, A-level and college exams should see more competition for places.

The 3rd XI are struggling in a division that pits them against the 4th XIs of several Premier and Division 1 Clubs. Vijay has already used 23 players, so some regular availabilities (in higher XIs) would help, here.

The fourths have been boosted by the form of Tariq Jameel with bat (200 runs at 40.8) and ball (12 wickets at 14). They are in third place in their division, but with the top teams establishing a lead it is already looking as if promotion could elude the fourth XI, once again.

The Colts continue to prosper, in both age-group and senior cricket.

The under-16s are unbeaten going into the Matchplay second round, and only two wins from a semi-final place. With the majority of squad still with two more seasons at this age- group the prospects for next season must be even better.

And almost the same squad will be representing the Oakfield Parkonians in a new, County-wide U18 competition this season. The first game, against Harold Wood, saw a stylish, unbeaten century from Dhruv Patel as Parks cruised to a seve-wicket victory.

Some of the younger Colts’ results have been looked impressive than in previous years, but the squads have bene hit by call ups to County and London Schools representative squads. The remaining Colts’ section members are getting the chance to play more than they might have, building match experience for the future.

All round - a good start; can do better. Hope the sun shines!
