Ilford Catholic first XI set an all-time club record for league cricket during their crushing victory over Theydon.

Big scores from Steve Ward (85), Abbas Saleem (53), Arvind Shinde (62 not out) and Ryan Naylor (57) saw Catholic post a massive 322-7 at Theydon to set up a 171-run Herts & Essex League win on Saturday.

Ward set about the Theydon attack, hitting nine fours to reach his half-century in just 10 overs. And when Ed Tooth went for 15, Saleem joined Ward and played some superb cover drives as the pair put on 52.

Ward reached 85 with some powerful hitting and was looking set for another hundred, but was caught off Bullivant by Bowyer.

First-team debutant Afghan Khan looked very comfortable at the crease and hit an effortless straight six, but fell shortly after for 11, making way for Shinde who built his innings nicely.

When Saleem departed, Naylor came to the crease and also took the Theydon bowling apart.

Shinde accelerated things with some classy batting and finished unbeaten on 62 as Catholic went on to post their record score.

In reply, John Rogers (2-43), Anujan Thiru (2-33), Abbas Saleem (1-14) and Wahab (3-35) finished the job to dismiss their hosts for 151.

■ Ilford Catholic second string maintained their hold on top spot in Division Four with a hard-fought win against High Roding.

After losing the toss, Catholic were asked to bat first and saw Bob Marsh (5) dismissed early.

Sarankan Skandamoorthy (3) fell soon after to leave Catholic in a spot of bother at 9-2.

But Arul Gopalasamy (54) joined Nigel Costin (60) in an excellent partnership of 123 to get them firmly back on track.

Skipper Martin Riches (9), Sulosan Thiru (14) and debutant Chris Maddison (0) could not add much to the total, but Annanth Kumar hit a quick unbeaten 40 and had support from Yash Agarwal and Deepak Singh to eventually give Catholic a respectable total of 231-9 to defend.

Arul Gopalasamy (2-33) and Mayuran Thiru (2-26) kept the High Roding scoring rate down, and Catholic never let them get on top.

Maddison (1-39) and Agarwal (0-47) bowled well through the middle part of the innings before Kumar (3-14) and Skandamoorthy (1-16) cleaned up the lower middle order to close the game off for Ilford’s 56-run win.
