Cambridge medical student Debayan Dasgupta got a first last week, but it wasn’t for his studies at university.

The 22-year-old left-arm fast bowler turned out for Woodford Wells’ seconds against Hainault & Clayhall, and promptly took all 10 wickets for a meagre 51 runs.

This remarkable feat has never been achieved in a league fixture for the Monkhams Lane club before, as club chairman Paul Murphy explained: “I normally skipper the thirds, but fortunately I happened to be captaining the seconds that day. “I seem to recall somebody taking all 10 wickets in a friendly match once, maybe 10 years ago, but it’s never been done in a league fixture for us before.

“And bear in mind, this was done with two league umpires standing on the day, and with Debayan never even having played for the first team before,” he added.

“Among these remarkable bowling figures, it’s worth noting that there was only one outfield catch, the rest being bowled or LBW.”

More remarkable still is the fact that Dasgupta claimed a hat-trick during his spell and was on another when the last wicket fell, having polished off the tail with consecutive balls.

“There were unbelievable scenes of celebration at the end of the match,” said Murphy, “high-fives all round. I don’t think it really sank in for Dabayan straight away.

“When the penny dropped he grabbed the ball for a souvenir, but I managed to wrestle it from his grasp as it’s destined for our trophy cabinet. We will get the scorecard and ball mounted as a reminder of a remarkable achievement.”
