T20 Invitation League underway

This year Ilford Catholic CC have launched a T20 midweek mini league for four local sides, including Woodford Wells, Loughton, South Loughton and themselves.

The competition began on Tuesday 10 June and runs for six weeks until 17 July.

Ilford Catholic chairman Vince Mulholland contacted local clubs to gauge interest in early 2014 and was encouraged by the enthusiasm the idea received.

Immediately Woodford Wells and Loughton from the Shepherd Neame Essex League signed up and South Loughton from the Herts & Essex League got involved.

But the competition isn’t just about turning up with the strongest side, playing the game and going home.

As Mulholland explained: “The aim of the ICCC T20 Invitation League was to create a T20 competition but with a subtle difference.

“This was to ensure a wider access to T20 cricket, which at a club level can often be restricted to 1st XI players only.

“The mixture of club players from different XIs in the teams creates a real club feel to the matches with players mixing with each other - as they often don’t get the chance to play in the same sides during Saturday league games.”

Set up to develop young cricketers and create a social atmosphere for midweek players from all teams, the competition has gotten off to a great start, with all four clubs getting into the spirit of it.

Highlights of the competition so far have included youngsters Andrew Bridges and James Crowe batting superbly to put on a century stand as Loughton won on a sunny evening at Barkingside Recreation Ground.

South Loughton also fared well in their games, with Kaiser Chowdhury picking up remarkable figures of 6-13 in four overs against Loughton and Lee Baker hitting an impressive 70 not out to win the game.

For Ilford Catholic, Steve Ward smashed a brilliant 70 versus Woodford Wells but 155 wasn’t enough with Jai Patel knocking off the runs in the last over to seal the win.

All matches have taken place during midweek evenings and provided a great chance for socialising during the World Cup, with clubs providing great visiting support to away fixtures.

The competition continues and this week Ilford Catholic visit South Loughton and Loughton host Woodford Wells at the Uplands.
