With the long winter of discontent finally over the first weekend of cricket has flown by like a fast wayward long hop down the leg side for four wides.

Five sweaters and two jumpers couldn’t keep the cold out on Sunday as 10 brave/stupid (delete as appropriate) blokes stood shivering in the rain over the Recreation Ground.

Hypothermia was duly kept at bay via long jogs to retrieve the ball from the swings after various ringers from the IPL found themselves smashing full tosses in a council park instead of walking out to fireworks and cheerleaders for Kings XI Punjab.

Saturday however was a lot brighter and the first games of the year attracted all players, old and new, back to active service but like any other cricket club in the land the same old patterns emerge.

Sloggers slog, blockers block, moaners moan and spin bowlers somehow still manage to bowl no-balls.

Meanwhile our regular third team opener, the “Boycott of Barkingside”, carried on where he left off from last year digging in with a gritty 14 in 17 overs.

They say batting is an art, but in his case it is “still life”, with more leaves than Epping Forest and more blocks than Legoland.

Still, two great warm-up days where hamstrings, knee joints and achilles were all given an MOT, cricket routine re-established and hopes raised again for another enjoyable season.
