Captain Britton calls for response to defeat

After suffering a heavy loss in Essex Division Two at the weekend, Fives & Heronians have a lot to think about ahead of an early season-defining game next Saturday.

Captain Ben Britton was understandably rather despondent after seeing his side go down by 125 runs to Belhus and was keen to draw a line under the defeat.

“We’re very disappointed,” he said. “We were looking to build on the good performance from the week before, but obviously it didn’t happen.”

Fives currently sit fifth in the league, but Britton is looking up rather than glancing over his shoulder.

Despite it being their first year in the division, the ambitious club are hoping for the best and gunning for promotion.

Britton added that the fixture list had been hard on his team, adding: “We’ve played the tough teams who we think will be up there with us.

“Being our first year in the division, it’s hard to judge, but after Belhus’ performance on Saturday they have every chance of being up there come the end of the season. Although I’d have to say Hornchurch were still miles better.”

Belhus currently occupy second place, one point adrift of league-leaders Hornchurch.

Fives are away to Gidea Park & Romford next and Britton expects a reaction from his players.

“Of course we’ve got to bounce back after getting bowled out for 64,” he said.

“If the aim is promotion then we need to get right back on track from where we are. We’ve got to win.”

With Gidea Park & Romford just three places behind Fives, the match is critical in determining whether Britton’s aims are realistic or if the new boys still have some way to go in solidifying their position in Division Two.
