Wanstead 188 all out beat South Woodford 164 all out by 24 runs
Wanstead captain Arfan Akram was pleased his side were able to record another win in the Essex League Premier Division on Saturday against South Woodford, especially after a horror start.
After their game the previous weekend against Upminster was abandoned, Akram’s team had to endure a short delay before they made a poor start to their innings and were reduced to 7-3.
However, with the help of Akram’s brother Adnan (65) the Herons were able to post a more than competitive 188 before eventually bowling out South Woodford for 164.
The Wanstead skipper was delighted, he said: “It was important to get back out there and playing after the previous week.
“We were really pleased with the win. It was a very close game and the build up to it wasn’t helpful with it raining lots on Thursday and Friday.
“Then we were three down with just seven on the board but the middle order did really well, anchored brilliantly by Adnan.
“He is batting really well at the moment, three exceptional knocks in his last three innings.
“We bowled really well too, getting wickets up front but hats of to their lads in the middle order they stuck in there and were hitting balls where fielders weren’t standing.”
Wanstead seemed in control of the chase but a good seventh wicket partnership for South Woodford threatened to take the game away from Akram’s team.
He was indebted to his excellent bowling unit, especially Joe Ellis-Grewal (4-49) and Mohammed Fayyaz Khan (2-31) as the pair helped earn a 24-run victory.
The win moved Wanstead back to the top of the table and left Akram satisfied that when needing people to contribute, they once again found the answers.
“It is nice to know you have people contributing from all over,” Akram said.
“Usman Sahar (1-18) and Zain Shahzad (3-52) did really well and then Joe and Fayyaz were phenomenal.
“It was a really good wicket by Joe to break the partnership as well and then it was like London buses, we picked up the rest of the wickets quite quickly.”
