Champions retain Premier Division crown
Wanstead were crowned champions of Essex for a second successive year after beating Shenfield in their Premier Division title decider at Overton Drive yesterday.
Arfan Akram’s men went into the winner-takes-all clash just five points behind the visitors, who won the toss and decided to bat first.
The move backfired, in stunning fashion, as Kishen Velani ripped out the Shenfield top order with the new ball.
Jamie Walton was dismissed without scoring, while the dangerous Arshad Ali (seven) and Daniel Jacob (two) also fell cheaply as Shenfield quickly found themselves 27-3 after eight overs.
Velani (4-10) also removed Ollie Ekers before Suhaib Sarwar and Matthew Salisbury steadied the Shenfield ship, but Rehan Hassan (4-5) and Joe Ellis-Grewal (2-1) then mopped up as the visitors were dismissed for just 95 in 26 overs.
Wanstead lost John Chambers cheaply in reply, but captain Akram (34) and Hassan (45 not out) took them to the brink before Velani helped seal an eight-wicket success in the 28th over.
And there was more good news for the club, as both their third and fifth teams also celebrated league title wins on an exciting final day of the season.
Akram tweeted: “The mighty @Wansteadcc 2013 @ShepherdNeame Premier League Champions. So proud of the team. #ProudCaptain #Herons #BackToBackChampions.”
Tributes poured in on the social media site, with Maurice Chambers tweeting: “Well done to @Wansteadcc for winning the league 2 year on the bounce. Have a great night guys. #champions”
