Akram congratulates rival skipper

Despite his obvious disappointment, Wanstead captain Arfan Akram’s first words were to congratulate new champions Chingford.

“I’d like to congratulate everybody at Chingford Cricket Club on a tremendous campaign and title win – well done everybody!” he said.

A season of great promise for the Herons has slowly slipped away from them as, at one point, they were in contention for four major prizes. Now they must try to win Sunday’s Essex League Cup final against the old foe Ilford to take their remaining chance of glory.

“We elected to bat first at Brentwood on Saturday on what’s best described as a tricky track, but it was hard to get our batting rhythm going,” said the skipper.

“We rode our luck a bit but 149 runs never looked enough, we should have posted more. Joe Ellis-Grewal played a cameo role for his 35 runs and Kishen Velani chipped in with 29, but like I say, we should have scored more.”

Brentwood’s Charlie Griffiths took four of the Heron’s wickets for just 22 runs but Akram thought their opponents were strong in depth.

“They bowled and fielded very well on the day, and Jonathan Walford was in excellent form with the bat,” he added.

With Walford in fine form, the home side passed the required total for the loss of four wickets in 38.4 overs in reply.
