Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate admitted to a sense of satisfaction after seeing his side complete an eight-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Centuries from debutant Murali Vijay (100) and Tom Westley (110 not out) – who put on 204 for the second wicket – saw them reach their target of 282 before lunch.

And after replying to the home side’s first innings of 177 with 233, before dismissing Nottinghamshire for 337 second time around, ten Doeschate said: “Not perfect but after the way the wicket changed after two days it was almost a game of two halves.

“To chase a big target like that is a very rewarding result and critical at this time of the season from the position we’ve found ourselves in, in the table.

“We didn’t want to chase anything over 300, so when Simon (Harmer) came on after lunch yesterday he really turned the game.”

South African spinner Harmer took 6-87 to pass 50 wickets for the campaign as Nottinghamshire fell away from 194-2.

Essex lost Nick Browne cheaply in their run chase but Indian Test batsman Vijay followed his first-innings 56 with 100 off 181 balls, including 15 fours.

Westley struck 19 boundaries in his 198-ball knock, with Dan Lawrence (29 not out) helping to take Essex over the finish line.

Ten Doeschate added: “The manner Murali has gone about his business in this game – in the first innings it was tough and he managed to grind out a fifty – and then in the big chase you want the top three to score runs and he did it with his hundred.

“He’s easy on the eye and showed the quality he possesses.”

Essex return to Chelmsford to host Worcestershire in their penultimate fixture on Tuesday (September 18).
