Last Man Stands format is going from strength to strength

The first Last Man Stands College Competition was held in Redbridge last week. The competition has been organised jointly by Vision-Redbridge Culture & Leisure and the University of East London and is supported by Last Man Stands, Essex Cricket and the England & Wales Cricket Board.

On a perfect day for cricket, Newham College, George Monoux College, NewVIc College and Havering Sixth Form battled it out to take the inaugural trophy.

There were some excellent performances from individuals and teams. The individual performances were recognised with a Last Man Stands cricket bat to the best player from each team. The overall winners were George Monoux, and the runners up were Newham College.

Last Man Stands is a new version of cricket which started in London in 2005. LMS expanded to South Africa in 2007, Australia in 2008 and New Zealand in 2009. It is an eight-a-side T20 cricket game which lasts around two hours. The concept of Last Man Stands is derived from the fact that when the seventh wicket falls, the Last Man Stands on his own. Each player receives cricket statistics and world rankings online.

Vision-Redbridge Culture & Leisure owns and runs the Redbridge Franchise, which is now in its third year. This year there are 18 teams registered who play in two leagues. All matches are played on midweek evenings during the summer at Hainault Recreation Ground, where two artificial pitches are available.
