Fives & Heronians clinched promotion to Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One with a closing-day win over Leigh.

The visitors chose to bat first at The Paddock, but lost early wickets and were always up against it as they were eventually dismissed for 131 in 38 overs.

Amila Peiris proved the pick of the bowling for Fives, recording figures of 12-4-24-5, as Jonny Kay (3-39) also had success.

But they lost Shawn Tuitt without scoring in reply and saw Terry Ballard and Gary Norris fall after making starts to find themselves 34-3.

Captain Jake Poulter held firm as wickets continued to fall and hit 13 fours in his unbeaten 64 from 52 balls as Fives clinched a three-wicket win in 24 overs.

And that saw them finish 24 points clear of third-placed South Woodford to follow champions Loughton in gaining a step up for 2019.
