Essex’s Sam Cook will have to come back to Earth quickly after celebrating their County Championship success.

The young seamer claimed his second five-wicket haul in successive games as the champions thrashed Yorkshire by 376 runs on Wednesday.

But he will be back at university in Loughborough next Monday and studying for his history degree and said: “It’s going to be a bit of a change. I’ll see when I get there. I’m sure the boys up there will bring me back down to earth from cloud nine that I’m on at the moment. It will be nice to get back up there be put in my place!

“I’m planning to head back on Friday because I need to sort myself out in my new house before term starts on Monday. I’ve got a dissertation, I think it’s 12,000 words, but that’s not due in until after Christmas. So I’ll get my head down, and work hard and then be raring to go for next season.”

Cook only made his first-team debut against the West Indies in August and went on to take 18 Championship wickets in four matches as Essex completed a 14-match unbeaten campaign.

He added: “It’s been an unbelievable couple of months. I’m chuffed with another five-fer, over the moon.

“Across the whole season we’ve bowled teams out in less than two sessions more than anyone else. It’s been a real strength to get quick wickets in clusters.

“I was fortunate that it was me, but earlier in the season you saw the likes of ‘Harmy’ and ‘Ports’ who were outstanding. They’ve done that all year along with ‘Wags’ and ‘Mo’.

“Over the course of the season they’ve taken five-week hauls, sixes and sevens and in Harmy’s case, nine!

“It shows what happens when you get on to a good team, we’ve got the quality to polish a game off and that’s why we won 10 games and gone unbeaten. It’s an amazing achievement.

“We have such a big squad of players, and such strength in depth that there is always going to be someone stepping up to the plate and raring to go. Right now we all want to be part of this team and this set-up. It just encourages you to go out and do more. It’s been an unbelievable year.”

Cook will now be busy with his books over the winter months, but he is already looking forward to the 2018 campaign, which starts with a match against the MCC at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

He added: “Depending what happens I’ll be available for the first game of next season. I should be available for the whole of next season.

“Our Loughborough season starts earlier than Essex’s so I may be able to get in a couple of games for them. But I need to sit down and talk about that.”
