Bancroft’s year-eight boys won the Under-13 Essex Cricket Cup when they defeated Southend Boys High School in the final.

With the opposition batting first, Bancroft’s made an excellent start with opening bowlers Haaris Sohoye and Tom Oliver capturing five wickets for 24 runs in the first six overs.

Captain Angad Nijjar then introduced himself and Jonny Bluff into the attack and the spinners pressed home their advantage and further wickets tumbled as Southend were dismissed for 34 runs.

In reply, Southend’s opening bowlers were hostile and accurate and created more than a little havoc when they claimed their first two Bancroft wickets for just six runs.

However, opening bat Will Hopkins, ably assisted by Murali Satchithananda, steadied the ship and saw off the full 10 overs of the two Southend strike bowlers.

By that stage, the Bancroft’s team had regained their composure and pressed on to seal an eight-wicket victory as the school claimed the Under-13 title for the second year in succession.
