The veterans of Wanstead Central battled to victory in the senior fours at Westcliff, while at the other of the scale the youngsters were also making their mark.

The Butcher brothers had not even had to break sweat on the way to the county semi-finals of the Junior Pairs as they had received a walkover all the way through.

And Charlie and Jack were not exactly sweating in the heat of Essex County Bowls Club in their opening match of the competition.

Playing against Ben Commerford and Nick Sharp of the Grays Town Club they were in front all the way.

They opened up a 7-0 lead before the Grays fans had realised what was going on and in the end they won 22-6.

“It was a lot easier than last year and I probably played a bit better than I did then,” said a delighted Charlie Butcher, who also won in the main pairs semi-final.

“Jack said last year it would have been nice if I had turned up! He played really well, the best he has played for a long time and it never looked like we could lose it.”

Victory puts them into the final against Daniel Rodger and Ryan Mann from Silver End, who pipped for Wanstead Central bowler Dan Hughes in the other semi-final on an extra end.

Only one team goes to Leamington in the junior pairs, but even if they win the final, Charlie won’t be there.

“I am not available for Leamington at that time,” said Charlie. “I will be playing in Dunoon in Scotland at an open bowls tournament.

“I am still hoping we make it though and I have a good substitute in Sam Moss.”
