It is a few years since Kevin Fitzgerald made the semi-final of the county singles, but he is back on course this year after booking his place in the area final.

The former policeman took on exciting youngster and fellow Central player Charlie Butcher on Monday and it proved to be a game too far for Butcher.

In the previous round he had needed a deciding end to sneak past Ilford’s Stuart Waters, but this time he struggled to stay with his opponent.

In the end, Fitzgerald got through by an emphatic 21-9 to make the Area final.

There he will play veteran Wanstead bowler Bob Lockyer who has had a magnificent run in the competition.

Already having seen off the likes of John Cook and James Rippey from Central, he took on Brian Powell of South Woodford in the semi-final and came through 21-14.

He has played all his games so far at home, so to advance to the last 16 he must travel and win at Nutter Lane.

The Area 10 competition saw Central’s Terry Lichkin continue his fine run to book his place in the Area Final.

He outplayed Ilford bowler Iain McConachie in his semi-final by 21-9 and may face a tougher task in the final when he takes on Aldersbrook bowler Jerry Quy.

He made the last 16 of the county event last summer and he made his way to the area final with a tough battle against Len Welton at Central.

It was nip and tuck early on until Quy picked up a four to go 16-11 in front.

He was holding four on the next too, but veteran left-hander Welton delivered his last wood to wrestle two shots of his own.

It was Quy who held his nerve though to win 21-16 and he will now return to Central for the tussle with Lichkin.

Victory for either man could mean a clash with former winner Andy Squire, while Ed Morris of Essex County is also in the competition still. Last year’s winner Steve Gunnell of Bournemouth Park is out oafter losing in his Area semi.

The next round is scheduled for this coming Monday with both games at Nutter Lane.

Area 9 final: Kevin Fitzgerald (Wanstead Central) v Bob Lockyer (Wanstead). Area 10 final: Terry Lichkin (Wanstead Central) v Jerry Quy (Aldersbrook)
