Buckhurst Hill GB athlete first home in her category

Buckhurst Hill’s GB athlete Claire Bloom was delighted to take the bronze medal at the ETU European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Kitzbuhel, Austria last week.

Competing in the 50-54 age group, Bloom was also the first GB athlete home in the category and can now look forward to
automatic qualification to the European Championships in Geneva in 2015.

“I was overjoyed to win the bronze as I’d never beaten the two GB athletes ahead of me in a race before,” said Bloom.

“There were so many European countries being represented this year it was an honour to compete in this field. I also beat my tri-racing hero Joyce Mark (55-59 age group) to top off my day,” she added.

The Austrian course involved a 750m swim in the Schwartzsee Lake, a 19.8km mountainous bike route and a 5km undulating run course around the lake to finish.

Bloom completed the course in one hour 22 minutes 45 seconds, comprising a 13.22 swim, 42.17 bike ride and a 21.32 run.

“The weather on race day was awful. It had been sunny leading up to the race, but on race
morning the rain fell making the bike course wet and slippery, said Bloom.

“Though the course had some stunning views and backdrops, the bike route had three big hills and some very windy, steep
descents meaning that bike
handling skills would need to be sharp.

“I came out of the swim in fifth position and in third place for GB. I mounted the bike and started chasing.

“I overtook the two GB
athletes on the second climb and tried to close the Austrians down. Despite a personal best in the run I missed out on silver by 38 seconds.

“I can’t thank my coach at RG Active, Dermott Hayes or David Lloyd Leisure enough for their sponsorship which funded me getting there,” she added.
