Central skip eyes Leamington trip for team-mate Woodford as semi looms

It’s county semi-finals day at Westcliff today, one of the highlights of the Essex bowling year, and Wanstead Central bowler Mitch Brenner is looking to go one better than last year in the fours.

His team were pipped last July after leading most of the way, but almost bowed out of this season’s competition in the quarter-final against Burnham Hillside.

“We were 18-9 down at one point,” said Brenner about last week’s match. “My lead, Terry Lichkin was playing well, but the others looked a bit nervous, while their first two bowlers were really finding it.”

The turning point came with Central finally launching some long jacks and when Burnham couldn’t reach them the tide began to swing back towards Brenner.

However, at 20-20 going into the final end, it was anyone’s game.

“It was so close,” added Brenner. “I drew the shot, which was a toucher, but with their last wood it came right in on it and landed maybe a quarter of an inch short – I was so nervous at that point, but luckily we came through.”

Lichkin, Russell Hughes, Paul Woodford and Brenner will now take on an experienced team from the Pegasus club, where three of their four are Essex county players.

“I think we are going in as the underdogs, but not in my mind as I always think I am going to win,” said Brenner.

“We were expected to win in the quarter-final, but this time Pegasus will be the favourites and that may take the pressure off us.

“I would really like to do it for Paul Woodford. He has never qualified for the nationals before and so I am doing it for him.”

Central’s Mark Nullmeyers certainly faces a busy day as he competes in three different county competitions.

He teams up with Dave Baxter and Andy Coultrup in the triples where they will take on a Romford team after a 25-14 win over Larsen in the last eight of the competition. Earlier in the day he will take on Mitchell Young of the Springhouse Club in the semis of the under-25 singles, the last time he can enter, before the mouthwatering singles clash with England international and former National champ Steve Mitchinson at 2pm.

Nullmeyers beat his Romford opponent in Top Club action three weeks ago and the England man will be looking for revenge.

Also in action is Ilford bowler Mark Wilson who takes on Pat Riley of Springhouse in the two-wood semi-final at 10am, while Ford Sports duo Bill Nelson and Glyn Walls have made their way through in the pairs.

They will now take on Ryan Mann and Karl Lodge of Silver End at 2pm after dispatching another Silver End team in the quarters.

All the action starts at 10am at the Essex County Bowls Club in Imperial Avenue, Westcliff-on-Sea.
