Fairbairn Boxing Club’s Taps Makhado brought back a silver medal from the Haringey Box Cup, Europe’s biggest club competition, staged at Alexandra Palace last weekend.

The Ilford club boxer won on Saturday but suffered a final defeat against powerful Nyall Berry from Birmingham’s O’Dells Community club in their Youth B 56kg final on Sunday.

Makhado had been in impressive form during his semi-final, earning a points victory over Harrogate opponent Jamie Walker.

Fairbairn’s Fatjon Gola fought bravely against heavy hooking Evoke Club rival Courtney Frimpong in a Senior A 64kg contest but suffered a points defeat.

Senior B 75kg entry Joshua Gustave lost a tight split verdict against first-day rival Andrei Descalu from Stonebridge who went on to take the gold medal.

And the club’s Taha Riaz also lost out in his Youth B 64kg contest to St Mary Chatham BC boxer Sam Dawson, who also won gold.
