Big-punching light-heavyweight Anthony Yarde can look forward to the new year with confidence after ending 2017 in explosive style at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday.

Ilford’s Yarde powered his way to a 14th straight victory, delighting the live audience and TV public as he provided the power to suggest he can continue his climb to boxing’s big time.

Yarde beat Montenegro’s Nikola Sjekloca in four rounds, taking some sharp punches on the way but also taking pride in overcoming his toughest rival to date.

“I will continue working hard in the gym aiming to make 2018 another good year,” said the winner, clearly pleased to continue the victory run which has seen him win all his fights in four rounds or less with only one victim hearing the final bell.

“Sjekloca had lost four fights against top rivals and never been stopped before, so I have to be pleased to beat like that,” added Yarde, who is trained by Tunde Ajayi at the Peacock gym in Canning Town.

Powerful left and right hooks sent Sjekloca to the canvas in the second and fourth rounds before referee Steve Gray signalled the end after one minute eight seconds of the fourth.

Yarde celebrated his latest success alongside Peacock gymmate Daniel Dubois, 20, whose sixth successive heavyweight win was a three-minute, 51-second destruction of Aberdare veteran Dorian Darch.

But Ilford’s Hamzah Sheeraz and Umar Sadiq saw supporting bouts on the bill cancelled because of an 11pm curfew at the Copper Box.

n Ilford featherweight Lucien Reid looks for his eighth win in an unbeaten pro career at Brentwood on Saturday. Charlie Duffield, Sam McNess, Charlie Driscoll, Boy Jones Junior, Ryan Garner and DP Carr are also named to appear on the Queensberry promotion.
