Title delight for Buckhurst Hill triathlete

Buckhurst Hill athlete Claire Bloom became a national champion at the weekend as she won her 50-54 age group title at the English Nation Sprint Triathlon Championships.

Bloom competed at the stunning Emberton Park in Buckinghamshire and recorded impressive times in the 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5.5km run to finish with an overall time of one hour, fourteen minutes and one second.

Bloom was delighted with her achievement and conceded she had to dig deep in the event, saying: “This was my first ever national win and comes off the back of my European bronze medal two weeks ago.

“I had to really dig deep, now my coach Dermott Hayes (RG Active Race Team) and I will be focusing on getting me prepared for the world championships.

“I’ll probably do a couple more warm-up races before flying out to Canada at the end of August.”

Bloom’s gruelling experience on the course was all worth it after recording her first ever national win.

She started off with a 750m swim and, despite describing it as brutal, she completed this in 13:31.

Next up was the 20km bike ride, of which Bloom added: “Along the bike course there was a lot of chasing down and battling for position. It was hard not to draft with so many athletes in close proximity.”

Bloom completed the bike section in 35:18 before she embarking on the 5.5km run which she finished in 24:22 to earn her first national triumph.
