Ilford bowler Bill Beney came up trumps with the final wood of his county pairs clash last week

Never give up seems to have been the lesson learned by Ilford pair Micky Pace and Bill Beney as they trailed in their County Pairs match for almost the entire evening, only to win it with the final wood.

A slow start against Hainault saw the pair slip 8-1 behind after just four ends and things did not improve much by the 10th as they still trailed by 16-6.

These boys are made of strong stuff though and slowly, but surely they worked their way back into the match, putting in a monumental effort to tie the game at 19-19 with three ends left to play.

However, the effort of drawing level seemed to have taken its toll as the next two ends saw them drop four shots to go behind 23-19 going into the final end.

They looked down and out, but it was to prove a mixture of skill and luck from Beney that was to see them through.

Beney’s last wood clipped his team-mate’s touching wood and caused the jack to move 18 inches giving the boys an amazing five count and victory by 24-23.

They will taken on Len Welton and Mick Bird of Wanstead Central in the next round.

There was a strong comeback from Biob Taylor in the Waugh Singles event where he found himself 11-1 down against C Hillsden from West Ham.

He kept his resolve though, slowly pulled back level at 14-14, before a big four count finally gave him victory by 21-16.

Ian MacConachie had a good week on the green both in singles and pairs.

He made light work of his over-55s singles against Alan Pearce from Wickford, winning 21-6 and also teamed up with John Kennedy for the first round of the London & Southern Counties pairs.

They were in fine form against Poplar duo Tommy Brooks and John Stacey, coming home winners by 20-8.

Meanwhile, the unstoppable girls march on.

Hayley Kenny’s county triple of Leanne and Brigit Granger proved too strong for Old Dagenham as they kept up the pressure throughout at Ilford winning 31-12 and booking a home tie with Elm Park in the next round.
