Scott Malvern moveds to the top of the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship
Barkingside Formula Renault race driver Scott Malvern enjoyed a fruitful weekend at Thruxton as he took over the lead in the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship.
The 23-year-old had not even visited the Hampshire circuit before last weekend but that didn’t stop him taking a race win first time out and he looked set to add a second until being hit controversially from behind by his closest championship rival Josh Webster.
He passed pole-sitter Webster in the opening race then he maintained a fairly comfortable gap until the chequered flag to notch up his race victory and fifth podium in the six championship rounds held so far.
After a long safety car period in race two, Malvern pulled off a near identical overtaking move on Webster to again seize the lead and looked to be in command as he set the fastest lap.
But on the penultimate lap Webster ran into the back of the Barkingside racer, sending him into a spin.
Managing to keep the engine running, Malvern re-joined the track to recover to fifth place.
Afterwards, he said: “I had a really good car this weekend and I was pleased I was able to learn a circuit that was completely new to me so quickly.
“It was great to get another win under my belt and I was almost home and dry in race two when Josh ran into the back of me.
Good weekend
“Overall it’s been a good weekend championship-wise. I’m really looking forward to the next event at Croft next month.”
He was second in the championship at the start of the weekend to Seb Morris but left Thruxton with a 20-point lead over Webster as Morris, who endured a difficult weekend, dropped to third in the standings.
But the 23-year-old also recently attracted interest from a leading GP3 team.
GP3 is a well recognised Formula One feeder category and the races are staged in support of all of the European Formula One Grand prix, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Malvern is keen to hear from any companies or individuals who are interested in the enormous potential of being part of a Grand Prix weekend who would like to consider partnering him.
