Youngsters battle for indoor 1,500m honours
Ilford’s Usamah Patel pipped clubmate and training partner Jack Maher to the Essex 1,500m Indoor title at Lee Valley.
The pair met in the under-17 final, with Maher taking up the early pace as the pair challenged at the front.
Patel made his move with around 250m to go, though, and held on to defeat the defending champion, as both finished inside the previous championship record.
Patel stopped the clock at 4.21, while Maher ran a personal best of 4.25.
Three Ilford athletes travelled to Chichester to run in the Priory 10k, which doubles up as the Sussex Championships.
Windy conditions affected times somewhat, with winner Phillip Wylie coming home in 30.23.
GB international Charlotte Purdue (33.37) took the honours in the women’s race, while Malcolm Muir was the first Ilford member home in 18th place overall in an excellent time of 32.38.
Spencer Hempstead was not far behind in 42nd in 34.12, earning him second spot in the V40 category.
And Matt Woodman completed the Ilford line-up in 45th place in a time of 34.32, in a field of 1,500 runners, to help the team finish in fifth overall.
