New Zealander wins 20-mile race in style
Ilford’s Blair McWhirter stormed to victory in the Essex 20-mile road race near Colchester – but was not eligible to claim the title as he has not completed the residential qualification of nine months.
New Zealander McWhirter was one of 12 Ilford members in action and led from the start to win eight minutes ahead of the field in 1:48.27, the fifth fastest time in the UK this year and seventh on the club’s all-time list.
Sam Rahman (2:09.12) led the scoring trio home in 16th, ahead of Paul Holloway (17th, 2:09.24) and Robin McNelis (18th, 2:09.58), as Ilford took team bronze.
Bree Nordin, the UK number one in the FV55 age group, claimed gold in 2:34.50 and was seventh among all women.
Kevin Newell finished 31st in 2:16.02, while Kevin Wotton was 43rd in 2:17.22 and Richard Mould clocked 2:32.15.
Rohan Alexander (2:34.14), Declan Cullen (2:50.22), Satha Alaganandasundaram (2:54.56) and Ian Wilson (2:57:26) all set personal bests for the distance.
A competitive run by Steve Philcox saw him finish ninth at the Roding Valley Half Marathon in 1:21.21, while Michael Horsey was 48tht in 1:31.31.
Moran Rahju clocked 1:44.16 to finish just ahead of Dan Cogan (1:45.21), as Peter Spelman (2:03.19) also competed.
Ilford’s John Batchelor celebrated two wins at the BMAF Indoor Championships at Lee Valley.
The 1,500m included over-70 men and over-65 women and Batchelor battled it out with multi-world record holder Angela Copson to win in an indoor best of 5mins 35.18secs.
It was a similar story in the 3,000m on Sunday as Batchelor pulled clear of Copson to win by 17 seconds in another best of 11mins 45.76secs.
