Joseph Dewar was in top form at the London Indoor Games

Sprinter Joseph Dewar set a new personal best at the London Indoor Games in Lee Valley last weekend.

The Woodford Green with Essex Ladies’ under-17s athlete won his 60 metre race with a new personal best of 7.05 seconds – moving him to fifth in this season’s UK rankings, where he also heads the long jump list for his age category.

Dewar was unable to replicate that form in his second race though, where he clocked 7.19.

Club-mate Kingsley Annor raced in the under-17s 200m, clocking 25.03 and was back on the track for the 400m where he finished in 56.19.

Several of Woodford’s senior athletes competed at the McCain Indoor City Challenge in Sheffield in preparation for next weekend’s UK Indoor Championships and World Indoor Trials at the same venue.

Sarah Claxton placed second in the 60m hurdles to world heptathlon silver medallist Jessica Ennis, recording 8.29. Meanwhile, Oli Heeks finished sixth in the 1,500m, clocking 3.57.19.

At the Birmingham Indoor Games at the National Indoor Arena, Elaine O’Neil won the senior women’s 60m.

O’Neil crossed the line in 7.48 to win, while club-mate Kitty Eleyae finished further back in eighth place, in a disappointing 7.80, after qualifying in 7.67.

However, Eleyae placed third in the long jump, registering 5.75m, while in the men’s 60m heats, Jason Greenidge recorded 7.21.

Over 200m, Eugene Ayanful just missed out on a place in the final after placing third in his semi-final in 21.82, as Paul Scanlan recorded 22.77 in his heat.

In the women’s 200m, Shana Cox was second in her heat in 24.19, but did not contest the final.

The previous day, although pulling up in the 400m final, Cox had recorded the fastest time of the heats with 53.08.

Tara Bird made her indoor season’s debut in the 800m, but lost out to regular rival Charlotte Best, as she finished second in 2.06.67.

Also finishing second was Richard Alleyne in the 60m hurdles in 7.89, after qualifying in 7.87 and Alasdair Strange successfully cleared 4.80m in the pole vault.
