It was a good day all round for the Hainault Roads Cycling Club members as they all recorded best times in the Eastern Counties Cycling Association’s 10-mile time trial on Saturday.

Conditions were favourable in the event which was open to riders from across East London and East Anglia, and that was backed up by Hainault’s first rider home, John Witchell (pictured below).

The ever-improving Witchell completed the Newmarket course in a time of 25.49 to knock almost two minutes off his previous best time.

Clubmate and Goodmayes resident Mark Steers was the next to cross the line, setting off a further 40 minutes behind Witchell.

But Steers outlined his claim for the club’s 10-mile trophy with a fine 20.59 clocking, breaking the 21-minute barrier for the first time in the absence of fellow contenders Howard Staunton and Russell Kober.

Long-distance expert Rob Dulson, despite winding down from a hard season of racing, still beat his personal best time by 30 seconds with a time of 21.46.
