The Redbridge elections were a disappointment for the Independent Loxford group.

Filly Maravala and Virendra Tewari failed to retain their seats, with their votes of 1,670 and 1,318 not enough to beat Labour.

Both men were elected to the council in 1994 and Mr Maravala was mayor in 1999/2000.

Newcomer Saima Butt also lost out.

Mr Maravala, who continued to protest about postal votes, said: “I would like to thank all of my residents, even though they didn’t vote for me, for the love and support they have extended to me over the last 20 years.”

Upon leaving Labour in May 2013, Mr Maravala said his 3,403 votes in 2010 were for “Filly Maravala the man” and that he “could have been running for the Monster Raving Loony Party”.

When asked about this, Mr Maravala said he believed action groups took credit for some of the things he did and that could be why he received less votes this time.

Independents Andy Walker and Harold Moth also lost out.

Mr Walker, running as the Save King George Hospital Party, received 1,092 votes in Aldborough, while Mr Moth received 658 in Fullwell.

Mr Walker, elected in 2010, was deselected by Labour for the elections and resigned from the party in 2013.

Mr Moth, who served on the council from 1974 to 1994, was elected in 1998 but expelled from the Conservative group in 2012 for allegedly making allegations against fellow members.

He joined the Redbridge Independent Group in 2013.

Despite having success elsewhere, Ukip failed to win any seats and nor did the Green Party.
