Woodford Green pro boxer Michael Norgrove undergoing treatment after being taken to hospital

A 31-year-old amateur boxer from Woodford Green is undergoing treatment after reportedly collapsing in the ring on Thursday night.

Light middleweight fighter Michael Norgrove was taking part in his sixth professional bout at The Ring boxing club in Southwark.

It has been reported on boxing website BoxRec that Mr Norgrove collapsed in the ring after suffering a suspected bleed on the brain.

Speaking this morning, Robert Smith, the general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, said: “[Mr Norgrove] was taken ill during the course of his contest.

“He was taken to hospital, he’s being treated and is in a stable condition. “It’s very early days and we shouldn’t speculate on anything at all.”

Mr Smith said the boxer was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and said the remaining fight on the card was cancelled.

The boxing club would not provide a comment this morning but a spokesman said a statement would be released later today.

The promotional team behind the fight, City Boxer, tweeted: “We are all thinking of you Michael Norgrove. Big love from the whole of cityboxer pro.”

The Zambian-born boxer was undefeated in his first five bouts and was previously a member of the Repton Boxing Club in Bethnal Green.

Messages of support for Mr Norgrove have been left on Twitter, including from Olympic gold medallist fighter James DeGale who said: “Praying that Michael norgrove pulls through. Hang on in there champ.”

Olympic bronze medallist fighter Anthony Ogogo tweeted: “Continually wishing positive thoughts to Michael Norgrove and to his family.”
