Woodford Green friends set for London to Beijing charity rally in 50-year-old Land Rover

Two car mad friends will be putting their latest vehicle to the test, as they travel from London to Beijing for charity, in a 50-year-old classic motor.

Adam Tarr and Alex Collard, 32, of Broomhill Road, Woodford Green, are taking part in a charity rally, where they will travel for 28 days, in a red 1963 ex-military Land Rover.

Adam said: “Many think we’re a bit crazy for our relentless pace, combined with frequent non-stop night driving, but it is all part of the fun.”

The pair, who call themselves the Rusty Rhinos, have been raising money for Mercy Corps, an international development and emergency response charity since 2007, with this year being their fifth rally.

The boys will be starting this year’s rally on June 21, where they will travel 16,000km through 10 countries including Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Adam said: “Our trips are truly a unique way for us to explore other countries whilst fundraising for Mercy Corps. Driving in an old car is always interesting as well as it’s a talking point with locals and it doesn’t take as much effort to fix.”

The Rusty Rhinos have so far raised £5,000 for Mercy Corps and are aiming to raise even more this year.

Director of fundraising and marketing at Mercy Corps, Ali MacLeod, said: “We are delighted that the Rusty Rhinos have chosen to once again support our work across the world.

“We are certain that many will rally behind Adam and Alex by showing their support and donating where possible. This is a wonderful challenge and adventure for the team – we wish them the best of luck!”
